A French River Tradition
Fresh fish. Open fire. Flat rock on the Canadian Shield.
Guides have been doing this on the French River for over a century.
Fire conditions permitting. Shore lunch is available when there is no active fire ban in effect on the French River. Adam will confirm availability when booking your trip.
More Than a Meal
Midday on the river, we pull the boat onto a flat rock. A fire is built from gathered hardwood. The cast iron comes out — the same pan that's been on hundreds of trips. Whatever we caught that morning goes straight from the water into the pan.
This is not a catered lunch. It's not a restaurant. It's a meal cooked on an open fire on the Canadian Shield, eaten with your hands on a rock, with the river running past your feet. No table. No chairs. No menu.
Fishing guides have been doing this on the French River for over a hundred years. It's one of the oldest traditions in Ontario guiding — and one worth keeping alive.
How It Goes
01
Everything starts on the water. Walleye are the traditional shore lunch fish — sweet, firm, and perfect in a pan. Pike and bass work beautifully too. Whatever we catch that morning is what goes on the fire.
02
The French River is Canadian Shield country — flat granite shelves everywhere. We pull the boat onto a good flat rock with a clear view of the water, gather wood, and build the fire. This part takes maybe twenty minutes.
03
The pan goes on the fire. Butter, a little oil, seasoning. The fillets go in skin-side down. You'll hear the sizzle before you smell it. There's no recipe — just heat, fat, and fresh fish.
04
No table. No chairs. You eat sitting on the rock with the river in front of you. Fried fish, bread, whatever else we've brought along. It's the best meal you'll have outdoors — guaranteed.
